Introduction to Honors Education

Honors 100 was the first honors course I took when I became involved with the Honors Program. Read one of my reflections below to learn more about how my quarter went and some of the goals I had early in college.

Honors 222

HIV and AIDS: Issues and Challenges

In this course, I learned about the history and science behind the HIV virus, including the most significant global challenges in addressing it. It was one of the first public health courses I took and truly sparked my interest in public health as a major. The final project was to create a report on how one country has progressed towards the 90-90-90 Sustainable Development Goals, developed in 2015 and set to be achieved in 2030. I chose to focus on the country of Kenya for my report. Below you can find a link to my final paper.

Honors 391 A

Yoga: History, Practice, and Health

Yoga has been a huge part of my life, I enjoy taking classes and learning about the practice. When I saw this class was being offered I was immediately hooked. It was so fascinating to learn more about the origin of yoga and the philosophy behind it. I am grateful for the experience this class gave me and I appreciate yoga so much more now! Take a look at my final project where I was able to interview my community about what yoga means to them.

CHID 434 and Honors Ad Hoc Project

Civil and Human Rights Law for Disabled People

CHID 434 focused on expanding student's knowledge of people with disabilities by learning about civil and human rights through studying disability in the United States and internationally. Much of the class was centered on analyzing the legal treatment and rights of those with disabilities, looking into how American history has shaped the civil and human rights of people with disabilities, and comparing and contrasting international models of rights. I highly value what I learned in this class because it has helped me understand how the legal treatment of individuals with disabilities affects how they are treated in society and how disability justice models could be incorporated into the law.  
In addition to this standard coursework, I completed an additional research project to receive honors credit. I took the quarter to research how the COIVD-19 pandemic impacted special education by exploring literature and interviewing individuals with connections to special education in Washington State's Battle Ground School District. The project goal was to understand how special education instruction and education had been impacted by the COIVD-19 pandemic. I interviewed several special education instructors, and a parent who's 1st daughter participates in a special education program. I hope to continue this project in Spring 2020 to research public policy surrounding education for students with disabilities. Please read the research report below.
